Who am I and why have I done this.
Hello there.
I’m Adam.
I’m a Vice President at a mid-market corporate advisory firm based in Sydney, Australia.
I’ve spent the last 8 years working on sell-side, buy-side and other transactions across a range of sectors. Some of these deals include this, this and this. There are a few more here, here, here and here.
When I was trying to break into investment banking, I did just about every online modelling course available. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably heard of the ones I did.
I thought these courses would give me the skills I needed to build a model for my first real transaction.
I was wrong.
The CFO sent me messy, monthly data across more than 50 tabs. Some tabs had thousands of row. Columns didn’t line up. Rows didn’t line up. Nothing reconciled.
Wait a minute – I thought all businesses reported their financials like Apple Inc.?
It took me over a month to build the model. It was an eye-opening experience.
_______
To be clear: I’m not a professional model builder. I do lots of things differently to others. I’m sure there are better modellers out there than me.
But I build models for real transactions. I’ve done it many times. My models have faced scrutiny from every Big 4 accounting firm and the top Private Equity firms in Australia.
This course takes you through every step of how I build financial models from scratch. It’s practically the same model I build for all my deals. The specifics change based on the context, but the approach doesn’t.
I will teach you the real thing.
I don’t know of any other courses like this.
But that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Hopefully not, because I would very much like you (and others) to buy this course.
Maybe I’ll see you on the other side. Maybe I won’t. That’s okay.
I hope you have a great day. And good luck out there.
P.S. That model I mentioned above that took me over a month to build? Now I could do it in under a week. And after this course, you could too.
Watch the course overview. It is good.
Occassionally asked questions
What is included in the course?
The course includes 29 hours of step-by-step videos covering 55 lessons, each with its own work-in-progress excel file (i.e. so you can see "before" and "after" versions of the model for that particular lesson/part). Go to the product page for further detail.
How long does it take to complete the course?
It depends on your prior knowledge and how familiar you are with financial modelling. Most students complete the course within a few weeks to a month, but can slow down or speed up certain sections as needed. I don't recommend rushing through. It is better to take your time and revise/rewatch certain lessons where you might have less experience.
Do you need prior excel and/or accounting knowledge to complete the course?
The course does go into quite a lot of detail on the relevant excel and accounting matters you need to be across to build the model. In saying that, I wouldn't recommend this course be your first exposure to either topic. A basic understanding of excel and accounting would be best. Feel free to reach out if you wanted some suggestions on what might be helpful to look into before starting this course.
Why is the course so expensive?
I don't think it is very expensive, especially given the content on offer. I would frame the cost as follows: $17.20 per hour of video content; <$2.00 per hour it took me to make the course and website; or <$0.01 per hour I've devoted to M&A and learning these skills. This course is like you getting the opportunity to sit next to me while I work on a model for a real transaction.
In addition, the relatively high entry price means only those serious about improving will buy the course - and that helps ensure the ones working through it are the ones who will take it seriously and get the most out of it.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
No, not at the moment. I am still learning the content/video creating side of things, and I don't quite think it's fair to offer all this information for someone to take in and then say "actually give me my money back".
I have tried to be very transparent with the materials and course overview video on the website, so there hopefully shouldn't be any surprises post purchase. It's important you review all these materials before you purchase.
If you are strongly against the course and have a particular issue with it after you buy it, please reach out and I will manage on a case by case basis.
Is the video quality high?
I've done my best. But recording videos and optimising the sound and video quality isn't my skill set. I think it is good enough for what it is, but certainly don't expect it to be professionally made - buy this for the course and materials. That is top quality.
How long does course access last?
This is something else I am figuring out. I have to pay to host the website, videos and excel files on a monthly basis into perpetuity. I don't think I can commit to lifetime access (otherwise this product wouldn't be economical). At this stage I am thinking at least 2 or 3 years, but you shouldn't be dragging out your progress anywhere near this length of time (I would say maximum 1 or 2 months). If you get to the end of 2 or 3 years and for whatever reason you still require access, please let me know and I'm sure we can work something out.
Do you provide ongoing support during the course?
I will do my best to help you with any issues or answer any questions. But please be mindful that I am still working full time in M&A, which means I don't have a lot of spare time.
I will endeavour to get back to any queries within ~48 hours, but this might sometimes slip to the weekend (not that I always have free weekends!).
Does the course incorporate AI?
No, it doesn't. In full transparency, I began putting together this course over a year ago and before the rapid progression of AI became as mainstream as it is today. I still haven't found anything that comes close to replicating the skills and knowledge you need to be able to work in M&A (especially when it comes to model building, like this course - most of the financial analysis AI plug-in's might work for high-level or somewhat generic exercises, but in no way give you the ability to think critically and model a business like you need to be capable of doing).
Maybe it will progress so much in the next year or so that this course becomes redundant. That's ok - I've built enough models in my life and would be happy not to have to build any more.
Isn't there more to M&A than building financial models
Absolutely. This is one small (albeit important - especially when trying to break into M&A) part of the job.
Depending on how much interest there is in the course, I am thinking about expanding the offering to more broadly cover what else is needed for the job and how you might go about breaking into the industry. I've been living and breathing it for almost a decade, so I think I have a bit to offer.
Feel free to reach out if you think you would be interested in these other types of materials.
What do I do if I'm having issues accessing the course materials?
Reach out to me. I'll do my best to help you as soon as possible.
I've finished the course. What now?
Go back to the beginning and try to build the model again, but this time without watching the videos. Use the lesson headings as a guide on what to do next, but only consult the videos if you get stuck. This will give you a good idea of your strengths and weaknesses.
Buy the course now. If you want to. If not, that's okay.
